The Nasinu Town Council is planning to construct a retirement home for the elderly and a modern childcare facility aimed at supporting single mothers.
Council chairman Felix Magnus announced that proceeds from the upcoming 2024 Nasinu Festival will be allocated to these initiatives, including the establishment of the retirement home. He emphasized the community’s need for such a facility and confirmed that land has already been secured for this purpose.
Magnus explained, “The council initiated the plan to create Nasinu’s first retirement home to care for senior citizens who are unable to receive support from their families.” He mentioned that they would consult with the Ministry of Lands for necessary approvals before engaging with relevant stakeholders.
According to Magnus, the Housing Assistance and Relief Trust (HART) is currently providing temporary housing for the Old People’s Home in Nasinu. He acknowledged past shortcomings in addressing the needs of the elderly residents, stating that part of the festival funds will also be directed toward renovating the existing elderly home and providing essential items like wheelchairs, proper beds, and adequate lighting.
With a growing number of single mothers in the area, Magnus pointed out that the childcare facility would help ensure children are not left unattended while their parents work. “When they are at work, who looks after their kids at home? By establishing this facility, children can be cared for during working hours,” he noted.
He reiterated the council’s commitment to sustaining efforts that aim to alleviate poverty within the community.
