The Nasinu Town Council has initiated a forensic audit to confront significant concerns regarding financial mismanagement from earlier administrations. Council Executive Chairman Felix Magnus announced that this audit will scrutinize financial records from 2018 to 2020 in response to alarming findings reported by the Auditor General, which highlighted possible misuse of Council funds.
During a presentation to the Public Accounts Committee, Magnus emphasized the Council’s dedication to ensuring accountability and good governance. He expressed the urgency of addressing the misappropriation of funds, stating that it has severely affected essential services and the residents of Nasinu.
“This audit will reveal the extent of these issues, and we will take decisive action to prevent future occurrences,” Magnus stated. He also noted the audit’s focus areas, which include cash controls, payroll systems, asset management, project oversight, and adherence to regulations. The initiative is backed by the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Finance, aiming to establish a foundation for enhanced financial integrity in future Council operations.
Magnus articulated a goal for the Council to attain an Unqualified Opinion on its accounts, indicating a strong commitment to financial transparency. He assured that any identified instances of mismanagement would be forwarded to appropriate investigative bodies, including the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
This proactive step by the Nasinu Town Council signifies a move towards transparent governance and accountability, fostering hope among residents for a more responsible management of public funds that will ultimately enhance community services.
Overall, this audit represents a significant stride toward restoring public trust and ensuring that the financial future of Nasinu remains secure and well-managed.
