Nasinu Council Sees Debt Recovery Progress Amid Consultative Shift

The Nasinu Town Council has reported a positive shift in its debt recovery efforts after engaging with ratepayers through a consultative process. Council chairperson Felix Magnus revealed that the total owed by ratepayers had decreased from $14 million to $12 million.

To enhance debt recovery, the council established a dedicated debt recovery unit just a month ago. Magnus noted significant improvements in engagement, stating, “We’ve seen an immense change in terms of ratepayers coming and making payments and arrangements for their payments.”

He attributed the previous high debt amount to a disconnect between the council and the ratepayers, as well as insufficient monitoring and consultation. However, he expressed optimism about the current progress, emphasizing that the consultative approach has facilitated the reduction in debt.

Looking ahead, Magnus is hopeful for a continued downward trend in arrears over the coming months, encouraging more ratepayers to take action and settle their outstanding payments.
