The Nasinu Town Council has initiated a forensic audit to tackle significant concerns about financial mismanagement stemming from previous administrations. In an address to the Public Accounts Committee, Council Executive Chairman Felix Magnus revealed that the audit will scrutinize financial records from 2018 to 2020, which were highlighted in Auditor General’s reports that flagged serious instances of fund misuse.
Magnus emphasized the Council’s commitment to accountability and responsible governance, stating, “We are here to set things right. The misappropriation of millions has compromised essential services, and the people of Nasinu have suffered.” He assured that this audit is crucial in uncovering the full scope of the issues and ensuring that such mismanagement does not recur in the future.
Supported by both the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Finance, the forensic audit will concentrate on various aspects, including cash controls, payroll, asset management, project oversight, and regulatory compliance. Magnus expressed hope that this initiative will build a strong foundation for future financial integrity within the Council’s operations. He also mentioned the goal of securing an Unqualified Opinion regarding Nasinu’s accounts and pledged that any findings of mismanagement would be referred to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) for further investigation.
This step represents a proactive approach to financial stewardship, aiming to restore the public’s trust and ensure better service delivery for the residents of Nasinu in the future.
