The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has embarked on a significant initiative by signing a $4.5 million partnership agreement with E-Tech Engineering Pte Ltd aimed at developing and upgrading the Nasinu Cemetery. This project is projected to create approximately 17,000 new burial plots, a critical addition considering the pressing public concern over existing cemetery space.
The agreement was formalized between Acting Commissioner of Corrections Auta Moceisuva and E-Tech Engineering Director Ashneel Singh. In remarks following the signing, Mr. Moceisuva highlighted that the project had taken nearly three years to finalize, owing to various public concerns and challenges related to the internal documentation and financial processes involved.
“On behalf of the Fiji Corrections Service, I would like to thank you for persevering with us,” expressed Mr. Moceisuva, reflecting on the obstacles that delayed implementation. He emphasized the contract’s signing marks a pivotal moment for addressing a pressing public concern—the limited capacity of the cemetery.
Currently, the existing burial space at Nasinu is minimal and is expected to be exhausted within the first quarter of the year. The expansion plan aims to provide sufficient burial plots to meet the demands for the next seven years, accommodating the area’s growing population.
Mr. Moceisuva noted the government is optimistic that this investment will effectively address the long-term burial needs of Fiji’s increasing population. E-Tech Engineering’s Director, Ashneel Singh, reciprocated thanks to the Fiji Corrections Service and the government, assuring that his team is already mobilizing on site to kickstart the project.
“Our team is already on the ground in Nasinu setting up the site office,” Mr. Singh stated. He expressed gratitude for the trust placed in E-Tech Engineering for such an essential project that will have a direct impact on the community, assuring stakeholders of the team’s commitment to executing the work diligently until completion.
Construction is set to commence shortly, paving the way for improved facilities that will benefit the public and address an important community need. This partnership highlights a proactive step taken by the Fiji government and the Fiji Corrections Service towards effectively managing burial space for its citizens.
