Nasinu Calls for Tougher Action Against Illegal Dumping

Felix Magnus, the Executive Chairman of Nasinu Town Council, is urging the Government to take stronger measures against the growing issue of illegal dumping, which is negatively impacting Fiji’s environment. He has highlighted the urgent need to reform the Litter Act, arguing that the fines currently imposed are inadequate to deter offenders.

Magnus pointed out that illegal dumping has become a significant problem not only in Nasinu but throughout Fiji. He noted that many offenders find it more cost-effective to pay the modest $40 fine than to arrange for proper disposal of their waste at the Naboro Landfill. This practice is unsustainable and forces councils to allocate resources to cleanup efforts instead of serving responsible citizens.

The costs incurred due to illegal dumping have strained the Nasinu Town Council’s budget, diverting funds away from essential services. Magnus emphasized that the existing penalties do not effectively address the harm caused by illegal dumping and are insufficient to discourage repeat offenders. “To achieve a clean environment and safe waterways, we need to implement higher fines that will genuinely prevent this behavior,” he said.

Additionally, he raised the concern over informal settlements, which are exempt from garbage collection fees but place a significant burden on council services. Magnus argued that it is only fair for all residents, including those in informal settlements, to contribute to waste management costs, ensuring equitable responsibility among all residents.

This call for action reflects a growing recognition of the necessity for improved environmental policies and community responsibility in waste management. By tackling illegal dumping and involving all residents in environmental sustainability efforts, Fiji can work towards a cleaner and healthier future.
