Tribal Risk Nasinu 2 made an impressive debut in the Vulaca Volleyball Championship, securing a convincing victory over Nadonumai 2 with identical sets of 25-15 during the opening day of the tournament at the FMF National Gymnasium in Suva.
The Nasinu Volleyball Association is representing three teams in the championship, with Nasinu 1 currently holding the title as the defending champions in the men’s division, while the Suva women’s team stands as the reigning champions in the women’s category.
Team captain Nacanieli Goneyali, a former national men’s netball player, expressed his pride in the influx of young talent on the team. He noted that their presence is pushing veteran players to enhance their skills, fostering a culture of collaboration and growth. “It’s good to see young talents coming in; that doesn’t harbor the old talents that are already at the spot. This is an opportunity for older players to pull up their skills,” Goneyali stated.
Having represented Fiji in men’s netball, Goneyali spoke about the advantages of participating in various sports, which he believes can elevate athletes’ overall capabilities. He commended the team’s preparation for the championship, indicating that this is their first significant tournament, and expressed confidence in their readiness to tackle the challenges ahead.
Reflecting on their performance in the first match, Goneyali viewed it as a productive warm-up and highlighted the importance of a strong defense for future games. He acknowledged the potential of their opponents’ youthful squad while indicating the necessity for increased intensity and defensive improvement in subsequent matches.
Goneyali also extended his gratitude to the supporters and families of the team for their unwavering encouragement, expressing optimism as they look forward to future encounters in the championship. With their solid start, Tribal Risk Nasinu 2 aims to build on this momentum as the tournament progresses, showcasing the promise of both emerging and established players in the league.
