In a significant development for Taveuni, the Yavusa Wainikeli of Naselesele Village has embarked on an ambitious agricultural initiative by signing a partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture. This collaboration focuses on harnessing 1,182 acres of Trust Land to boost food security, employment, and stimulate economic growth within the community.
Agriculture Minister Tomasi Tunabuna emphasized the importance of such partnerships between communities and the government, underlining their role in unlocking economic potential and promoting sustainable development. The Ministry has committed to providing technical support and guidance to ensure the project utilizes the land responsibly and sustainably.
Advisor to the Wainikeli Trustees, Suliano Ramanu, expressed deep gratitude for the Ministry’s support. He views the Memorandum of Understanding as a pivotal moment for the Wainikeli people, anticipating lasting benefits for future generations.
The project’s framework will operate under a Cooperative solesolevaki model and a Buy Scheme approach, ensuring that the benefits of development are shared equitably among landowners. Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Waterways, Dr. Andrew Tukana, highlighted the importance of secure land tenure and traditional stewardship in advancing national development. The planning phase will incorporate modern and climate-smart agricultural practices, aiming to maximize the land’s productivity.
This initiative reflects a broader trend in the region where local communities are increasingly engaging in land development projects supported by government initiatives, as seen in other areas of Fiji. Efforts like these not only enhance agricultural productivity but also reaffirm traditional stewardship and participation in the modern economy, fostering a sense of empowerment and collaboration among landowners.
Overall, the partnership between the Yavusa Wainikeli and the Agriculture Ministry symbolizes a forward-looking approach to land use, balancing economic growth with cultural preservation and sustainability. This project serves as a model for other communities looking to leverage their natural resources for community development and prosperity.
