On New Year’s Day, families and community groups flocked to Naselai beach in Tailevu, embracing a cherished tradition of gathering for food and togetherness as they welcomed the new year. Jiutajia Salabuco noted that the outing has become an annual event for many families, particularly those with children.

“This is a tradition for us every year; we come here to enjoy the fellowship,” Salabuco said, highlighting the joy children find in swimming at the beach. The Waila community joined together with their Sunday school team, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with laughter and joy across generations.

From infants to senior citizens, the event attracted members of the community, with Salabuco mentioning the youngest participants were only one year old while elders enjoyed the day from the back, resting and preparing for a communal lunch.

Food was shared through a potluck arrangement, allowing everyone to contribute something to the meal. “We just bring whatever we can; some bring lovo, and others bring food from last night—it’s all about sharing,” she explained.

Despite the beach being bustling with visitors, Salabuco encouraged others to come and experience the lively spirit of Naselai during the festive season. “Happy New Year to everyone, come to Naselai—the laughter and fun are all here,” she said.

This annual gathering signifies more than just a picnic; it represents a fresh start rooted in unity and cultural traditions, bringing communities closer together as they step into the new year.
