A significant tourism development project worth millions is set to commence on Nasaulevu Island. The announcement was made following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the island’s owners, the Nakovacake Development Trust (NDT), the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which outlines a master plan for the island.
Nasaulevu Island spans 747 acres and is located opposite Denarau Port Marina, close to Fantasy Island. Brigadier-General Manoa Gadai, the chairman of NDT and Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Joint Task Force, highlighted the importance of the MOU during a ceremony in Navoci Village, Nadi, saying it marks the start of a journey aimed at eradicating poverty among the island’s inhabitants and empowering future generations. He described the MOU as a symbol of transformative development for the island, particularly with the prospective large-scale tourism project.
Gadai noted that the project is expected to kick off next May, with the Revised Masterplan for the Nasaulevu Integrated Tourism Development Project anticipated to take between six to nine months, including conducting a feasibility study. During this planning phase, negotiations will begin regarding a proposed joint venture with FNPF and ADB. Once a joint venture proposal is confirmed, another MOU will be signed to move forward with the project.
According to Gadai, this project is poised to be a significant and unique tourism development initiative in Fiji and the wider region. ADB director general Cathy Marsh mentioned that the initial budget for the master plan is set at $300,000, with plans to deploy specialists to begin work before the end of the year.
Minister for Public Works, Meteorology, and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, expressed the government’s readiness to support landowners as they pursue economic opportunities. NDT secretary Anare Naivutevute remarked that the master plan would be unparalleled, branding the project as the hub for the South Pacific.
The ADB is interested in funding the construction of various developments, including resorts, commercial and residential lots, as well as a cultural center. This cultural center aims to draw tourists to Fiji, allowing them to immerse themselves in the local culture and experiences unique to the islands.
