Narewa Village Youth Transforming Agriculture with Community Spirit

A committed group of young men and women from Narewa Village in Nadi is striving to enhance their community through various agricultural initiatives, particularly farming. They are part of the Sa Dina Youth Cooperative, which consists of 69 members, including youths.

Co-founder Buli Ratu shared that the cooperative has been operational since the 1960s, mainly focusing on cassava cultivation. He stated, “Currently, we have 32 youth, 10 women, and 27 men within our cooperative. Our efforts span not just agriculture, but also community service, such as village clean-up projects to promote healthy living.”

The cooperative officially registered with the Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises and Communications last year. Recently, they received a tractor from the Ministry of Agriculture, with part of the expenditure funded by the Government. Mr. Ratu expressed gratitude, noting, “Having a tractor will greatly facilitate our land preparation.”

He added that the group managed to finance one-third of the total tractor cost, emphasizing their resolve and teamwork. “We understand the significant challenges that lie ahead and are confident that our unity will lead to substantial rewards in the near future.”

The youth are utilizing the solesolevaki (group work) approach to farming, which fosters collaboration. Additionally, the Sa Dina Youth Cooperative has secured a contract to supply vegetables and cassava to the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa.

Minister for Agriculture Vatimi Rayalu emphasized the importance of youth involvement in agriculture for fostering stronger, more productive communities.
