Nareki Leads Otago to NPC Final Showdown with Canterbury

Former All Blacks 7s winger Jona Nareki showcased his thrilling skill and determination, leading Otago to a commanding 41-17 victory over Bay of Plenty in the semi-finals of the Bunnings National Provincial Championship this past weekend. This match marked an important moment in Nareki’s career as he played his 66th game for Otago and notched his 37th try for the team, serving as a pivotal player throughout the contest.

Nareki’s impact was particularly evident just before halftime, when he executed a precise 50/22 kick that set up a swift lineout, which directly led to a try by blindside flanker Will Stoddart, giving Otago a solid 21-12 lead going into halftime. This kind of play highlights Nareki’s ability to not only score but also create significant opportunities for his teammates.

In the second half, Nareki’s impressive performance continued as he won one of his four turnovers by forcing his way into a Bay of Plenty ruck, contributing to a penalty by Cam Miller with the score at 28-12. His relentless pressure throughout the match forced a mistake from Bay of Plenty fullback Cole Forbes, leading to Finn Hurley extending Otago’s lead to 31-12.

This victory was not only notable in terms of the scoreline but also marked Otago’s largest win against Bay of Plenty since 2001, when they achieved a 62-15 triumph. With this win, Otago secured their seventh straight victory, a streak they haven’t seen since their championship-winning run in 1998.

Otago is set to face Canterbury in the cup final on Saturday at 3:05 PM at Apollo Projects Stadium in Christchurch. As anticipation builds for this decisive match, the team and fans alike are filled with optimism, hopeful that they can secure a championship title, which would further solidify their remarkable journey through this season. Nareki’s resurgence serves as an inspiration, highlighting the talent and potential that can lead to significant success on the rugby field.
