Australian media has reported the successful interception of a narco-submarine, which was carrying over two tonnes of cocaine intended for Australia, by authorities in Fiji. The operation took place on Friday at Vatia Wharf in Tavua, located in Fiji’s northwest, where police boarded the vessel and reportedly seized 130 sacks of the illicit drug.
In total, six individuals were arrested during the operation, including two local Fijians and four South American men, who are believed to be from Ecuador. Australian estimates suggest that the street value of the seized cocaine could surpass A$2 billion if sold in Australia.
Authorities suspect that the cocaine made its way into the Pacific via the narco-submarine, which traveled a significant distance from the other side of the world at some point last year. Sources within the Australian police force indicated that they were aware of the seizure and believe that the shipment was ultimately bound for Australia, with a portion also intended for New Zealand.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) is actively collaborating with Fijian authorities throughout the investigation. They affirmed their commitment to international cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking in the Pacific region, as evidenced by their partnership with the Fiji Police Force on this case.
Fiji’s Police Force has confirmed the arrests and explained that the operation stemmed from collaborative efforts between local and international law enforcement agencies. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu remarked on the success of the operation, noting that the raid involved members of multiple specialized units, including the Criminal Investigations Department and the Serious Organised Crime and Intelligence Department. He also mentioned that ongoing investigations would continue to evaluate all aspects of the case.
This incident highlights not only the persistent threat of international drug trafficking but also the vital role of cooperation between nations in combating such criminal activities.
