Twenty families in the Narau Settlement of Rakiraki are now enjoying access to clean and reliable drinking water, thanks to the recent commissioning of the Narau Water Project by Mosese Bulitavu, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management. This project marks a significant relief for residents, many of whom endured decades of hardship, relying on a creek that progressively became unsafe.

Long-time resident Linieta Dreka, who has lived in Narau for over 30 years, expressed her gratitude, highlighting how the project has transformed their daily lives. “For many years, life was very hard. We carried water from the creek for everything. Now our children will have a better life,” she shared, emphasizing the positive impact this initiative has on the community.

The Narau Water Project, completed at a cost of $34,000 under the High-Risk Water and Sanitation Programme, provides not only safe water but also contributes to improved health, hygiene, and overall living conditions. Bulitavu pointed out the importance of access to clean water for rural communities, explaining that it alleviates the burden on women and children while enhancing overall well-being.

In addition to the water project, Bulitavu also launched a rural housing initiative and the Anasa Beef Farming Project during his visit. These efforts aim to bolster livelihoods and foster economic resilience within the region. Anasa Turaga, a local beef farmer managing over 100 cattle, remarked on the timely support, which he believes will encourage youth interest in livestock farming.

Bulitavu emphasized that these projects embody the government’s integrated approach to rural development, aiming to improve health, livelihoods, and community resilience simultaneously. As these initiatives unfold, they offer a hopeful outlook for the enhancement of living standards and economic opportunities within Narau Settlement and beyond.
