Residents of Naqiliso Settlement in Davuilevu are facing severe flooding issues that they attribute to drainage blockage caused by cemetery extension work conducted by the Fiji Corrections Service. Approximately 500 residents have expressed concerns over the main drain being obstructed, leading to stagnant and foul-smelling water surrounding their homes, which poses significant health and safety risks.

Narayan Sami, a long-time resident of the settlement, reported that the situation has escalated recently due to heavy rainfall. He described the rising water levels as alarming, stating, “The water keeps rising and there is nowhere for it to go, and it’s almost coming into the houses.” Sami’s worries extend to the health of children in the area, as they must navigate through the foul water on their way to school, raising fears of potential illnesses.

The community had previously voiced concerns about the cemetery expansion encroaching on residential territory, with assurances from authorities that consultations would take place before any further developments. “We are not against the cemetery extension, but they should build a proper drain first. Without drainage, how can the water be controlled?” Sami emphasized the necessity of proper drainage to manage water flow and prevent flooding.

Another resident, minivan driver Sanjay Narayan, noted the challenges he faces as the flooded streets have rendered him unable to work for several days, posing a risk of damage to his vehicle. Residents are collectively urging local authorities to take immediate action in installing an effective drainage system to mitigate flooding and ensure the safety of families in the area.

As of now, the Fiji Corrections Service has been contacted for an official response regarding these distressing issues, but they have yet to provide any feedback. The situation remains dire for the residents, who are hopeful for an urgent resolution to safeguard their homes and livelihoods.
