The paramount chief of Namosi, Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, is spearheading a vital initiative to enhance HIV awareness and education across villages in the province in the upcoming weeks. This campaign is being conducted in collaboration with the Serua/Namosi HIV Taskforce and the Ministry of Health, with assistance from the Fiji Police Force.
In a recent interview, Ratu Suliano expressed pride in being part of this collaborative effort, which aims not only to boost HIV awareness and safe health practices but also to promote blood donation as a critical civic duty. He shared his concerns about the alarming rise of HIV rates in the region, highlighting drug use as a contributing factor, particularly affecting the younger population.
“This situation is indeed alarming, especially in the Central Division. The escalation is partially due to drugs, which are negatively influencing our youth,” he said, emphasizing the urgency of addressing this issue. The campaign will encompass both inland and coastal villages, featuring mobile testing and educational programs aimed at prevention. Community elders have already been informed, and outreach activities are slated to commence within two weeks.
Ratu Suliano articulated his broader vision of making Namosi a drug-free province by 2028, with the ambitious goal of eliminating HIV transmission in the region by 2030. Health workers will conduct instant HIV tests and provide education on prevention methods, while police personnel are expected to assist with outreach and drug awareness activities.
This approach not only underscores a commitment to safeguarding the health of the population, particularly the youth, but also highlights a crucial collaboration between health authorities, community leaders, and law enforcement. The ongoing efforts reflect a unified strategy to tackle pressing social issues, promoting a healthier and safer future for all residents of Namosi.
Reflecting on the community’s challenges, the initiative underscores the importance of collective responsibility in addressing public health concerns, inspiring hope for substantial positive change in the region. The proactive stance taken by Ratu Suliano and the community of Namosi could serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges, showcasing the power of cooperation and commitment in creating meaningful change.
