Villagers in Navunikabi, Namosi, expressed their strong opposition to a proposed hydro dam during a peaceful protest on Saturday. Nearly 100 residents, including both the young and elderly, gathered near the site to voice their concerns, holding banners and placards that conveyed their message: “We say no to a hydro dam.”

The proposed hydroelectric project, estimated at $200 million, is planned for three locations: Wainikoroiluva, Wainikovu, and Waivaka, affecting both Namosi and Naitasiri provinces. Led by Tui Namosi, Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, the initiative has faced criticism from villagers who feel their perspectives have not been accurately represented during consultations.

While some community members are open to development, the majority are worried about the potential flooding of their homes due to rising water levels associated with the dam. Simione Mekemeke, a member of the Lomani Au Maroroi Au (LAMA) group from Navunikabi, emphasized the villagers’ connection to their land, stating that relocation is not an option for them.

Mekemeke highlighted that initial studies for the project were conducted without proper communication with the villagers, leaving them feeling sidelined. Residents are also concerned about the potential negative impacts on local businesses, including the Namosi Eco Retreat, should the project proceed.

LAMA chairman Sipiriano Nariva reiterated the committee’s stance against the development, urging the government to respect the wishes of the landowners. He stated, “The bottom line of what we want is – no to hydro. We want to tell the Government and everyone who is behind this proposed hydro to please leave us alone.”

Elderly villagers like Sabeta Seniqumu shared similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of their cultural heritage and agriculture. Despite directives regarding potential relocation from their chief, the villagers remain steadfast in their opposition.

Mareta Nayadi, another resident, noted their reliance on local resources for their livelihood and questioned the need for the dams, especially given their existing access to electricity. Makitalena Nayara also voiced her opposition, reflecting the widespread discontent within the community.

Namosi Provincial Council chair Ratu Iowane Matanitobua confirmed that the project is still in the feasibility study phase, with no concrete plans yet. Attempts to contact Tui Namosi Ratu Suliano Matanitobua and EFL CEO Hasmukh Patel for comments were unsuccessful as of last night.
