Landowners in Namosi, staunchly opposing mining initiatives on their ancestral land, have criticized Filimoni Vosarogo, the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, for what they perceive as unprofessional conduct. This backlash follows Mr. Vosarogo’s remarks questioning the role of Sipiriano Nariva, chairman of the Lomani Au Maroroi Au (LAMA) organization, within the iTaukei administrative framework.

According to a statement issued by LAMA, Mr. Vosarogo’s remarks indicate a disconnect from the community and suggest he is aligning too closely with Tui Namosi to push for development projects without securing the necessary community approvals. The organization emphasizes that while Mr. Vosarogo and Tui Namosi are not the landowners of the areas earmarked for mining, Mr. Nariva holds the authority to represent the landowners’ views.

LAMA has underscored the importance of recognizing that the land designated for mining development involves multiple landowning groups, not just the Mataqali Nabukebuke. They are urging the minister to engage with all relevant landowners, rather than a select few.

Critically, LAMA points out that Mr. Vosarogo has yet to visit Namosi to genuinely hear the community’s concerns. In response to the criticism, the minister has indicated that he plans to address these issues at an upcoming meeting with the Mataqali Nabukebuke scheduled for mid-2025.

It’s vital for such disputes to highlight the importance of communication and collaboration between government officials and local communities. Engaging in meaningful dialogue can pave the way for mutual understanding, and hopefully lead to mining practices that respect both the environment and the rights of indigenous landowners.

In summary, the contention between LAMA and Minister Vosarogo underscores the tensions surrounding land use and development. The hope remains that through continued engagement, all parties can reach an agreement that honors the voices of the communities affected.
