Landowners in Namosi who oppose mining activities on their lands have criticized the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, for his alleged unprofessional conduct. This backlash came after Vosarogo questioned the authority of Sipiriano Nariva, the chairman of the Lomani Au Maroroi Au (LAMA), within the iTaukei administrative framework.

LAMA issued a statement condemning Vosarogo’s comments, suggesting that his approach demonstrates a disconnect from the local community. They argue that Vosarogo, alongside Tui Namosi, is prioritizing development initiatives without genuinely consulting the affected landowners. The organization emphasized that Vosarogo and Tui Namosi do not own the land in question, stating that Nariva is acting with the explicit consent of the landowners to represent their interests.

The organization particularly urged the minister to engage meaningfully with all landowners rather than favoring only a select few, which they believe undermines the collective voice of the community. LAMA indicated that they opposed the license renewal for mining activities, not just the Mataqali Nabukebuke, suggesting that a broader conversation is necessary.

In response to the criticism, Vosarogo stated he would address these concerns in a meeting with the Mataqali Nabukebuke planned for mid-2025.

This situation highlights the ongoing tension between local communities and government decisions regarding resource exploitation, a dynamic crucial for ensuring that the voices of landowners are respected and heard. As discussions progress, it brings hope for improved communication and collaboration that could lead to development projects aligning more closely with community interests.
