Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo has provided clarity regarding the Namosi Joint Venture (NJV) project, stating that it is still in the exploration phase and that no mining activities are currently taking place. The NJV has submitted a request for the renewal of its Special Prospecting License, which is currently under review by the Ministry.
During this process, the minister has highlighted the importance of discussions with local landowners, including the Mataqali Nabukebuke and the Lomani Au, Maroroi Au (LAMA) landowners’ committee, who have voiced their opposition to the project. Concerns have been raised regarding potential environmental degradation and impacts on livelihoods, particularly due to past exploration efforts that reportedly resulted in biodiversity loss and diminished agricultural resources.
In response to these concerns, the Ministry has indicated that it will conduct further consultations with landowners before making any final decisions on the license renewal. Minister Vosarogo is scheduled to meet with these landowners tomorrow to engage in meaningful discussions about their concerns.
This ongoing dialogue reflects a recognition of the need to balance local interests with the potential benefits of mineral resource development. It is encouraging to see the government taking steps to address landowner worries, signaling a commitment to fostering a collaborative approach in managing natural resources. Such engagements may pave the way for more sustainable and mutually beneficial outcomes as all parties work towards shared goals.
