Namaka Public School (NPS) has recently been recognized as the best primary school in the Lautoka/Nadi/Yasawa district for 2024, an achievement that propels the school into contention for a regional award. The accolade was presented by the Ministry of Education last Friday, highlighting the institution’s commitment to excellence in education.
Head teacher Arvin Kumar expressed immense pride in the school’s accomplishment, stating the recognition serves as motivation for both the management and teachers to enhance the quality of education. “This award has inspired us to continually refine our teaching methods and overall learning environment, ensuring all students receive a well-rounded education,” Kumar remarked.
Established in 1962 and supported by local community members, NPS is a multi-racial, co-educational school that serves a diverse student body from nearby areas, including Lautoka and Korovuto. The school also boasts a strong presence in sports, with students actively participating and excelling in netball, soccer, rugby, athletics, swimming, and cricket. Notably, 36 students represented Nadi in this year’s national athletic games, and the school has also introduced swimming lessons for its kindergarten students.
With a current enrollment of 1,347 students and a dedicated staff of 33 teachers, NPS has achieved impressive academic success, as evidenced by the 85% pass rate among its students preparing for the Fiji Year 8 examination. Many of these high-achieving students will transition to esteemed secondary schools such as Ratu Kadavulevu School and Queen Victoria School.
Recent improvements to the school’s infrastructure include a new multi-purpose hall valued at $400,000, along with additional facilities like a walkway, mini theatre, and enhanced IT resources for the classrooms. The school also features an international-sized playground designed for both soccer and rugby, catering to the physical development of its students.
Furthermore, NPS has ambitious plans for the future with a 10-year master plan aiming to construct 15 new classrooms, a science lab, a library, washrooms, and a swimming pool. This forward-thinking approach demonstrates a commitment to providing an enriching educational environment that supports both academic and extracurricular activities.
In conclusion, Namaka Public School exemplifies the positive impact of community involvement and dedication to student success, with aspirations to expand and elevate its educational offerings in the years to come.
