Namaka Public School (NPS) has received a significant boost in its aspirations for regional recognition following its recent accolade as the best primary school in the Lautoka/Nadi/Yasawa district for 2024, awarded by the Ministry of Education.
Head teacher Arvin Kumar expressed his pride and honor in receiving the award, emphasizing the school’s commitment to becoming the best in the South Pacific. This recognition serves as a motivator for the school management and educators to continue enhancing their teaching and learning strategies in all key areas. Mr. Kumar noted, “There is now a platform to improve the learning environment, enabling stakeholders to work collaboratively and provide holistic education to all students.”
Established in 1962, NPS is a co-educational institution managed by local community members, catering to a diverse student population from its immediate area and beyond, including Lautoka and Korovuto. The school has a strong sports program, participating in netball, soccer, rugby, athletics, swimming, and cricket. Notably, 36 students represented the Nadi athletics team in this year’s national games, and swimming has been newly introduced for kindergarten students.
Currently, NPS enrolls 1,347 students with 33 teachers, including 140 in kindergarten with eight dedicated teachers. The school has successfully prepared 176 students for the Fiji Year 8 examination this year, achieving an impressive 85 percent pass rate, with many students transitioning to prestigious secondary schools for Year Nine next year.
In recent developments, NPS has upgraded its facilities with a $400,000 multi-purpose hall that hosts various school programs and generates income through rentals. Additional infrastructure improvements include a walkway, mini-theater, and enhanced IT resources in classrooms. The school boasts an international-sized playground for soccer and rugby, showcasing its commitment to providing quality physical education.
Looking towards the future, NPS has a comprehensive 10-year master plan that includes the construction of 15 new classrooms, a science lab, library, washrooms, and a swimming pool. This progressive vision aims to further enhance the educational experience for all students.
The achievements and ongoing developments at Namaka Public School reflect a commitment to excellence in education, setting a hopeful example for other schools in the region. With a strong foundation and ambitious plans in place, NPS is well-poised to continue its journey towards being a leading educational institution in the South Pacific.
