Namaka Public School (NPS) has recently received the award for being the best primary school in the Lautoka/Nadi/Yasawa district for 2024, which has set the foundation for its aspirations to contend for a regional accolade. The recognition was bestowed by the Ministry of Education during a ceremony held on Friday.
Head teacher Arvin Kumar expressed pride in the achievement, stating, “I feel very proud and honoured for the award. We are aiming to make NPS the best in the South Pacific.” This accolade motivates the school’s management and educators to continually enhance their planning and delivery methods, ensuring excellence in student education.
With the establishment of a positive platform for improvement, Kumar emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to foster a holistic educational experience for all students. Namaka Public School, which was founded in 1962, is community-managed and features a diverse, co-educational setting, serving students from nearby areas as well as those traveling from Lautoka and Korovuto.
The school has also made notable contributions in various sporting events, including netball, soccer, rugby, athletics, swimming, and cricket. This year, 36 students represented Nadi in the national athletics games, while the school has expanded its reach by introducing swimming lessons for kindergarten students.
Currently, NPS enrolls 1,347 students and employs 33 teachers, with 140 enrolled in kindergarten. The school had 176 students sitting for the Fiji Year 8 examination, achieving an impressive 85% pass rate. High-achieving students from NPS have gained admission to well-respected secondary schools, including Ratu Kadavulevu School and Queen Victoria School, to name a few.
In terms of infrastructure, Namaka Public School has invested $400,000 in a multi-purpose hall, which serves as a venue for school events and generates additional income through rentals. Recent improvements also include the construction of a walkway and mini-theater, as well as enhancements in IT facilities to enrich the learning experience.
Furthermore, the school boasts an international-sized playground for sports and has developed a comprehensive 10-year master plan, aiming to construct 15 new classrooms, a science lab, library, washrooms, and a swimming pool in the future.
This recent award and the initiatives being implemented by NPS reflect a bright future, focusing not only on academic success but also on creating a well-rounded environment for all students.
In conclusion, Namaka Public School’s commitment to excellence and community involvement signifies a promising path forward, enhancing opportunities for students while striving to be a leading educational institution in the region.
