Namaka Public School (NPS) has recently been honored with the title of Best Primary School in the Lautoka/Nadi/Yasawa district for 2024, an achievement that paves the way for the school’s ambition to compete for regional accolades. This recognition, awarded by the Ministry of Education last Friday, underscores the dedication and hard work put forth by the school community.

Head teacher Arvin Kumar expressed his pride in receiving this award, emphasizing the school’s commitment to excellence. “We are aiming to make NPS the best in the South Pacific,” he stated, indicating a vision that extends beyond local recognition. This award serves as a catalyst, inspiring the school’s management and educators to continue enhancing their teaching methods and learning environments.

Established in 1962, NPS is managed by local community members and provides a multi-racial and coeducational environment. The school caters to a diverse group of approximately 1,347 students, including those traveling from distant areas such as Lautoka and Korovuto. In addition to academic success, NPS has an impressive record in sports, participating in various competitions across netball, soccer, rugby, athletics, swimming, and cricket.

This year, the school had 36 students representing Nadi in the national athletics team, alongside the introduction of swimming classes for kindergarten students. Notably, 176 students prepared for the Fiji Year 8 examination, achieving an 85 percent pass rate, with many securing places in esteemed secondary institutions for the upcoming academic year.

The school has also made significant investments in its infrastructure, including a newly built multi-purpose hall valued at $400,000. This space not only supports the school’s educational programs but is also rented out to generate income. Additional improvements include a walkway, a mini theatre, and enhanced IT resources in classrooms, all aimed at enriching the educational experience.

Looking ahead, NPS has ambitious plans with its 10-year master plan, which includes constructing 15 new classrooms, a science lab, a library, washrooms, and a swimming pool. Mr. Kumar’s vision, backed by the school’s committed staff and community, points to a promising future, not only for NPS but for the students it serves.

This news highlights the importance of community involvement in education and how recognition can spur further achievements. The ongoing developments at NPS reflect a positive trend towards holistic education and a commitment to providing the best possible learning experience for students.
