The Nalolo Council of Chiefs convened today to enhance the business capabilities of the Vanua and improve long-term revenue streams for village development. This crucial meeting brought together chiefs and representatives who discussed the management of income generated from Nalolo’s resources through organized investment models aimed at benefiting the entire community.

According to Sitiveni Nawaqa, President of the Viti Indigenous Tourism Alliance, effective governance systems are now being implemented. Nawaqa explained that the Vanua Nalolo Investment is responsible for managing assets via a trust, while the Denalo Cooperative supervises commercial activities in sectors such as transport and agriculture.

A significant point of discussion was the Memorandum of Understanding signed in December, which guarantees that business ventures related to developments in Nalolo are first presented to the landowning units. This initiative is designed to ensure that the economic advantages remain within the Vanua.

The expected revenue generated from these investments is set to benefit community projects and education across the six villages of Nalolo. Projects include enhancing water supplies, constructing footpaths and bridges, and establishing early childhood facilities. Nawaqa emphasized the urgent need for these improvements, particularly in water access, stating that many areas within the Vanua lack sufficient water resources.

Additionally, discussions included stakeholders from Momi Bay Resort, the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF), and various government ministries. The aim was to harmonize traditional leadership with contemporary business practices in order to invigorate the Vanua’s economy.

Overall, this initiative reflects a promising approach to not only strengthen the local economy but also to improve the quality of life for residents in the Nalolo community. By integrating structured investments with community-driven projects, the Vanua is taking proactive steps toward sustainable development and empowerment.
