The new Nakasi Police Station, a $36 million facility, was inaugurated today by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad. Although operational since 2023, the official opening ceremony marks a significant milestone for the community it serves.
Serving over 45,000 residents within the Nakasi corridor, this station acts as a crucial center for the Eastern Division Headquarters, which oversees five police stations and 13 community posts spanning Tailevu, Naitasiri, Rewa, and Lomaiviti. Professor Prasad underscored the government’s commitment to fortifying the Fiji Police Force through ongoing investment, which seeks not only to enhance resources but also to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness.
He reported a notable increase in police manpower, with over 1,000 new personnel added – nearly a 20% increase in strength – highlighting the government’s confidence in the police force’s leadership and its capacity to address public safety challenges. Emphasizing the importance of partnership, he urged communities to collaborate with law enforcement to uphold the law and ensure a secure environment.
This development aligns with the broader strategy outlined in the recent national budget, where the Fiji Police Force is set to receive a $13.5 million increase, bringing its total allocation to $240.3 million. The intended expansion includes the recruitment of 1,000 new officers, further reflecting the government’s responsiveness to the pressing need for enhanced police capabilities as crime rates have risen by 26% in recent years.
Overall, the opening of the Nakasi Police Station not only signifies a physical enhancement of resources but also resonates with a dedicated commitment to improving public safety, fostering community collaboration, and working towards a more secure future for all Fijians.
