Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, officially inaugurated the new Nakasi Police Station in Nausori, a facility designed to enhance public safety in the region. This new station is not just an essential local resource but also a significant hub for the Eastern Division Headquarters, which oversees five other policing stations and 13 community posts. The station will cater to the needs of over 45,000 residents from Nakasi, Wainibuku, Davuilevu, and Koronivia.
Although the station has been operational since 2023, this official opening marks a crucial milestone for the local community. Professor Prasad highlighted the government’s ongoing commitment to bolster the Fiji Police Force through strategic investments aimed at improving resources and operational effectiveness. This development is seen as part of a broader strategy that includes a notable increase in police personnel—over 1,000 new officers—reflecting a nearly 20% enhancement in police strength.
The new facility is aligned with the recent national budget allocation for the Fiji Police Force, which has seen an increase of $13.5 million, bringing the total funding to $240.3 million. This funding is a response to rising crime rates, which have increased by 26% in recent years, and aims to enhance police capabilities to address public safety challenges effectively.
The opening of the Nakasi Police Station signifies more than just a physical infrastructure upgrade. It embodies a commitment to public safety, community collaboration, and a positive outlook toward a safer future for all Fijians. The integration of this facility in the local environment is expected to foster a stronger partnership between law enforcement and the communities they serve, ensuring that residents feel secure and supported.
