The recent inauguration of the $36 million Nakasi Police Station marks a significant milestone in Fiji’s commitment to enhancing public safety and security. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized this commitment during the ceremony, which also highlighted the government’s plan to recruit an additional 1,000 police officers, raising the total force from 5,550 to 6,650.
This expansion represents a substantial investment of $40 million annually, aiming to bolster police presence nationwide. Professor Prasad articulated that a larger police force will facilitate quicker crime response times and foster improved community engagement, critical as the nation faces rising crime rates, which have increased by 26% in recent years.
The government is escalating its support for the Fiji Police Force with a total budget of $240 million for the 2025-2026 financial year. This includes an increase of $13.5 million from previous funding levels to meet pressing security needs. Prof Prasad stated, “Without safety and security, there can be no sustainable development,” underlining the link between public safety and national progress.
The Nakasi police complex serves not only as a local resource but also as the main hub for the Eastern Division headquarters, which coordinates activities across five other stations and 13 community posts serving more than 45,000 residents in Nakasi, Wainibuku, Davuilevu, and Koronivia. The facility includes modern amenities such as dedicated interview rooms, gender-specific cells, and specialized units, including a tourist police unit.
As the government endeavors to strengthen law enforcement capabilities, this initiative is a crucial step toward combating crime effectively and enhancing public trust in the police force. The expansion of policing resources coupled with community collaboration highlights a hopeful trajectory for greater safety and security in Fiji, paving the way for a more secure environment for all citizens.
