The construction of Fiji National University’s Naiyaca Campus in Labasa is making significant progress, with the first phase expected to be completed by June next year. Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba reported that work is advancing well, with some classes already taking place in areas of the campus that have been completed.

This facility is anticipated to serve as an important educational center for the Northern Division, despite facing numerous delays since the project’s inception in 2013. Professor Nabobo-Baba emphasized the university’s commitment to completing the campus, stating, “Fiji National University will begin the next phase of completing this campus in June. What you see today is just the beginning, but from June to July next year, we will make sure this is fully completed and ready for operations.”

The Naiyaca campus is intended to eventually become the primary learning hub in Vanua Levu, allowing the university to transition from operating from its Naduna and Naiyaca campuses to a more centralized location. Professor Nabobo-Baba also expressed resilience in the face of the project’s challenges over the past 15 years, highlighting the determination shown particularly in the last two years to see it through to completion.

The North Commanding Officer of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Major Penasio Mamau, indicated that the progress of the FNU campus aligns well with the Government’s vision under the NaVualiku Initiative, reinforcing the importance of educational development in the region.

In another achievement, 365 students graduated from 14 courses under FNU’s Regional and Rural Maritime TVET program at the Naiyaca Campus last weekend, marking a significant milestone in enhancing educational opportunities in the North. This progress signals a hopeful future for educational development in Fiji, reflecting the university’s ongoing commitment to serve the community and contribute to the broader advancement of the region.
