Construction on the Fiji National University’s Naiyaca Campus in Labasa, which has faced significant delays, is set to resume next year with a completion target of 2026. Originally started in 2018, the project’s timeline has been hindered by multiple stoppages, creating a six-year setback that has stalled its promise of enhanced educational opportunities for residents in the Northern Division.

In a recent statement, FNU Vice Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba emphasized the university’s commitment to completing the campus. She acknowledged the challenges but expressed optimism about the future. “Our focus is now firmly on the future. Our goal is to create a campus that serves the people of the Northern Division with excellence and purpose,” she stated.

The university has announced a phased development approach following a thorough project budget review. The first phase will prioritize essential facilities such as classrooms, student amenities, and administrative offices, aiming to make the campus operational soon. Further phases will expand upon the infrastructure requirements.

FNU is actively seeking funding partners, engaging with government bodies, private investors, and philanthropic organizations to facilitate the project’s financial needs. While specific budget details have not been disclosed, Prof Nabobo-Baba assured the public that all financial resources would be managed responsibly and transparently.

“This campus is not just about infrastructure – it’s about enhancing educational access and fostering community development,” she remarked. She promised more transparency in how future funding is utilized and confirmed the intention to keep the community updated on the campus’s development as construction resumes and funding becomes available.

Looking ahead, FNU is optimistic that the completion of the Naiyaca Campus will significantly improve educational prospects in Labasa and the broader Northern Division, aiming to be a transformative resource for generations to come.

This initiative underscores the university’s dedication to education and community growth. As the project moves forward, it holds the potential to positively impact local residents and foster a richer academic environment.
