Naitasiri’s Youth Rugby Tournament: A Community’s Bold Move for Change

The Waimanu 7s rugby tournament was officially launched last week at Lomaikoro Hall in Colo-i-Suva. Sponsored for the second consecutive year by Flame Tree Development-Fiji Ltd, this event aims to address the lack of youth rugby development in the province.

Representatives from three villages in Naitasiri have organized this community-driven tournament in response to the Naitasiri Rugby Union’s insufficient investment in grassroots development. This neglect has raised alarms about youth resorting to harmful activities, such as drug use and alcohol consumption.

Alipate Navuso emphasized the urgency of the initiative, stating that the youth have faced long-term neglect. He expressed concern that without appropriate development avenues, they have turned to destructive habits. “This tournament is our way of uniting them, providing a positive outlet, and helping them recognize their potential,” Navuso said.

The tournament, structured over three stages, offers local youth the chance to showcase their abilities and attract the attention of provincial and national selectors. Last year’s event resulted in two players being chosen for the Fiji U20 development team, a milestone that has inspired the community to persist with the tournament.

“Our objective is to close the gap that has existed since the early 2000s and to increase the number of players representing the national team,” Navuso noted. He added that the Naitasiri Rugby Union has been invited to participate in this year’s tournament to scout potential talent, with hopes of seeing more local players in the national team soon.

Moreover, the tournament acts as a crucial unifying element within the community. A five-year plan is underway not only to nurture talent but also to keep the youth engaged and away from societal issues. Glenn, a local sponsor who has been integral to the initiative, received recognition for his significant contributions. “Glenn’s sponsorship has made a tremendous impact,” he remarked. “He is helping us forge a positive future for our youth, and we are incredibly thankful.”

This year’s tournament begins on Saturday, with additional stages set for November 9 and December 7, culminating in significant competitions like the Fiji Bitter 7s. With a renewed emphasis on preparation and training, the community is optimistic that this year will yield even more success, both on the field and beyond.
