Naitasiri’s depth fuels Skipper Cup quarterfinal win, sets up Tailevu semifinal clash

Naitasiri Rugby showcased their resilience and tactical finesse in the Skipper Cup quarterfinals, securing a decisive 32-18 victory over Ba at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka. In a remarkable display of depth, nearly half of Naitasiri’s matchday squad was rotated from the previous week, a strategy that coach Ilaitia Tuisese employed with confidence. This decision proved beneficial as his team overcame a shaky start to dominate the match and secure their place in next week’s semifinals.

The match began with Ba taking control of possession and territory in the opening minutes, leading by six points after two penalty kicks from fly-half William Ryland. However, Naitasiri quickly regrouped, with Fiji Water Flying Fijians representative Kavaia Tagivetaua notching a try in the 13th minute. Although they missed a conversion, this moment marked the turning point for Naitasiri. Following a yellow card issued to Jone Naqiri in the 19th minute, Naitasiri seized momentum, scoring another try by Sakaraia Soqonakalou shortly after, which again went unconverted.

Fullback Senijiale Qiokata added further momentum by converting a try, sending Naitasiri into halftime with a 17-6 lead. The second half saw Naitasiri extend their lead with another unconverted try from Soqonakalou before a penalty from Etonia Rokotuisawa solidified their advantage. Although Ba attempted to rally with an unconverted try by Meli Tuvusa, Naitasiri’s commitment and determination prevailed as they scored yet another unconverted try, sealing the match at 32-18.

Tuisese praised his players’ efforts, reflecting on their ability to adapt to challenges while emphasizing that there is still work to accomplish before the semifinals. The team’s depth was further underscored against previous competitors, as they had successfully defended the Farebrother-Sullivan Trophy in earlier matches, showcasing their capability to perform under pressure.

As Naitasiri prepares for their semifinal showdown against Tailevu, the community’s robust support is palpable. This victory not only reinforces their status in Fijian rugby but also instills hope among fans for the team’s continued success in the Skipper Cup. The passion and determination exhibited by Naitasiri are truly emblematic of the vibrant rugby culture in Fiji, solidifying their journey towards possibly claiming more glory in the coveted tournament.
