Seventeen students from Naitasiri Secondary School, who were involved in an accident on Monday, will be eligible for a compassionate pass pending the required reports from the Sub Divisional Medical Officer (SDMO) Naitasiri and the Head of School (HoS). This confirmation was provided by the Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro.
The unfortunate incident occurred at the Saumakia Junction in Navuniyasi Village, where it is reported that the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to the accident. The injured students were swiftly transported to Vunidawa Hospital for necessary medical treatment.
Minister Radrodro stated that further details on the probable cause of the accident cannot be disclosed as police investigations are ongoing. He emphasized that the compassionate pass for the affected students would be enacted following the completion of the SDMO and HoS assessments.
In addition, he mentioned that the Ministry encourages students to file claims with the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji (ACCF). The Head of School will provide assistance to affected students, parents, and guardians in preparing these claims based on the police and medical reports.
Minister Radrodro also urged parents, guardians, teachers, and students to stay proactive regarding safety measures to avert such unfortunate events in the future. He highlighted that this incident serves as a poignant reminder of life’s fragility and the resilience of the community, reinforcing the support of the Ministry for the affected students and their families.
This incident, while tragic, can serve as a catalyst for improved safety protocols and community engagement aimed at preventing future accidents, ultimately fostering a stronger, more alert environment for students.
