Seventeen students from Naitasiri Secondary School who were involved in a traffic accident on Monday will be granted a compassionate pass, pending necessary reports and recommendations from the Sub Divisional Medical Officer (SDMO) of Naitasiri and the Head of School (HoS). This was confirmed by the Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro.
The accident occurred at Navuniyasi Village at Saumakia Junction, where the vehicle reportedly lost control. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP) Livai Driu stated that the driver veered off the road, leading to the incident. Injured students were promptly taken to Vunidawa Hospital for medical care.
Mr. Radrodro noted that it is too early to provide detailed information regarding the cause of the accident, as investigations are ongoing. He emphasized that the compassionate pass for the students will take effect after the relevant reports are submitted.
In addition, Mr. Radrodro announced that impacted students would be encouraged to file claims with the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji (ACCF). The Head of School will assist parents and guardians in this process, based on the findings from both police and medical reports. He urged the community to stay informed and proactive about safety to avert future accidents and highlighted the importance of community support during such challenging times.
This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the value of life and the resilience of the community. The Ministry of Education has expressed its unwavering support for the affected students and their families.
Overall, while this event is unfortunate, it highlights the strength of community ties and the commitment to support those in need. Moving forward, the focus will be on safety and recovery for the students involved.
