Former Vodafone Fiji Bati captain Kevin Ligani Naiqama received a heartfelt farewell as he played his final game during the Pacific Bowl championship on Saturday night. The Bati team decisively defeated the Cook Islands, finishing with a score of 56-6 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, marking a memorable send-off for the 35-year-old player.

Naiqama, who hails from Nabuna, Koro in Lomaiviti, expressed a desire to spend quality time with his family and reflect on his illustrious rugby league career. Throughout his time in the sport, he proudly represented Fiji in three Rugby League World Cups, captaining the team in two, including the recent 2022 World Cup in England, where they reached the quarter-finals before losing to New Zealand.

With an impressive record of 24 caps for the Bati, Naiqama also enjoyed considerable success in club rugby, winning three NRL Grand Finals and two Super League titles during his career. Reflecting on his last two weeks in Fiji, he described the experience as emotional and fulfilling. “I’m really honoured and privileged to represent my country – it was just so fitting to have my last game here in Fiji,” he remarked.

Looking ahead, Naiqama is eager to support his wife, Lily, in whatever plans she has for their future together. He also praised the Bati team’s performance, noting that they have a solid chance of securing the Pacific Bowl Championship depending on the outcome of the Cook Islands match against Papua New Guinea.

Naiqama’s professional journey has included time in the Super League since 2019, a return to the NRL in 2022, and he has recently played for Huddersfield Giants, participating in 52 matches since 2023. His deep connection to representing Fiji makes the sport uniquely special to him, as he emphasized the familial ties that unite the players.

His family’s support was evident during his farewell, as they donned T-shirts emblazoned with his name and face. Over the course of his 14-year career, he has played for several clubs, including the Newcastle Knights, Penrith Panthers, Wests Tigers, St Helens RLFC, Sydney Roosters, and recently, the Huddersfield Giants.

Kevin Naiqama’s legacy in rugby league is marked by his dedication, passion, and the deep-rooted connections he has fostered throughout his career. As he steps into a new chapter focused on family, supporters remain hopeful that he will continue to inspire younger generations of players both on and off the field.
