Despite many dismissing Sigatoka Electric/Nadroga Auto Marine Upholstery Works Nadroga FC’s chances in the 2024 FMF Inter-District Championship following their 0-7 defeat to Extra Supermarket Rewa FC, the team turned their fortunes around with a 1-0 victory over RC Manubhai Ba FC yesterday.
Fiji Football Association’s national Under-16 head coach Sunil Kumar, who took over from Viliame Toma after the heavy loss to Rewa, quickly implemented his tactical expertise, leading to a much-improved performance from the Stallions. With this win, Nadroga FC remains in contention for a semi-final spot, as they prepare to face Nadi FC in a crucial match today.
Both teams showcased attacking play during the first half, with notable attempts from Rusiate Matarerega and Ba’s Nabil Begg. Nadroga took the lead when Semesa Sacere’s header slipped past Ba goalkeeper Atunaisa Naucukidi, resulting in a 1-0 scoreline. Ba put pressure on Nadroga but could not find a way through their defense. Nadroga effectively utilized long passes and quick counter-attacks throughout the match, securing the victory.
After the match, Kumar praised his team’s resilience and fighting spirit in bouncing back from the heavy defeat. He emphasized the importance of self-belief and pride in their district, which contributed to their positive result.
In other matches, FLiCK Hygiene Suva FC and Navua FC played to a 2-2 draw, complicating both teams’ chances of progressing to the semi-finals. Suva initially led 2-1 at halftime, but Navua equalized in the second half with a goal from Thomas Dunn. Both teams now have one point each. In today’s critical matches, Navua will face Labasa FC, while Suva will take on Lautoka FC.
Suva coach Babs Khan remains optimistic about their chances, hoping for a favorable outcome in the Labasa-Navua game. Meanwhile, Navua coach Saiyad Ali expressed concerns about the muddy field conditions affecting their game strategy but remain determined to fight for qualification.
