Mainstream secondary education has officially resumed in the Nadroga Navosa district with the commissioning of the Nadroga Navosa Provincial High School on January 21, 2026. The event marked a significant milestone for families in the region who have faced years of educational disruption and limited access to secondary education options nearby.
Minister for Education, Hon. Aseri Masivou Radrodro, officiated the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of restoring a vital learning pathway closer to home for local students. The high school will initially offer Year 9 classes, which will help alleviate challenges associated with long travel distances, the cost of transportation, and restricted placement opportunities in other secondary schools.
The school aims to serve students from several nearby primary institutions, including Naidovi Primary School, Naidiri Khalsa Primary School, Nadroga Sangam Primary School, Cuvu District School, and Nadromai District School. In his address, Hon. Radrodro reiterated the Government’s commitment to promoting equitable access and inclusion in education, underlining the support measures available to families, such as the $200 Back-to-School Assistance and the eTransport subsidy, designed to ease financial burdens.
The Minister announced that vocational training will be integrated alongside mainstream education to offer students opportunities in both academic and technical fields, catering to national workforce demands. He highlighted four educational priorities aimed at enhancing access and infrastructure, improving teaching quality and school leadership, ensuring a relevant curriculum, and fostering student wellbeing and discipline.
The reopening of Nadroga Navosa Provincial High School also reconnects the institution to its historical origins, having first been established as Tavuki Mission School under the Methodist Church of Fiji before evolving to serve students from Navosa and the surrounding islands. During the ceremony, Hon. Radrodro presented a sevusevu to the Paramount Chief of Nadroga, Turaga Na Ka Levu, Ratu Tevita Makutu, acknowledging the cultural significance of the occasion.
In closing, the Minister stressed that education is a collective responsibility that demands strong partnerships among families, schools, communities, the Church, and the Province. The reopening of the school underscores the Government’s dedication to ensuring that no child is disadvantaged due to their geographic location, creating a hopeful future for the youth in the Nadroga Navosa district.
