Aging infrastructure coupled with rising demand is causing significant disruptions to the water supply in various parts of Nadi, Fiji. The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has acknowledged that the water system is strained and requires urgent attention.

During a recent meeting with residents from the Malolo Transmitter area, community members expressed frustrations over frequent dry taps during the day. They reported that water service typically resumes late at night, often around midnight or as late as 2 or 3 a.m. Many families have taken to staying awake to fill containers to ensure they have enough water for the following day, while some residents claim that water trucks can take two to three days to respond after complaints are filed.

WAF noted that the water supply issues extend beyond Malolo Transmitter, impacting other regions in Nadi as well. The Nagado Water Treatment Plant is facing challenges keeping pace with the growing demand driven by population increases. The geographic elevation of Malolo Transmitter complicates matters further since the water system relies heavily on gravitational flow. Currently, only three water trucks are designated to serve multiple affected areas, prioritizing schools and health facilities in the distribution of water.

Officials from WAF announced that plans for system upgrades are in the works to enhance the reliability of the water supply. However, a definitive timeline for when these improvements will commence has not yet been established. Until a permanent resolution is implemented, residents will continue to depend on water carting as a temporary measure.

While the situation poses challenges for many, the acknowledgment from WAF and the plans for upgrades provide a sense of hope that the water supply issues in Nadi will be addressed in the near future.
