The Enamanu cemetery in Nadi has reached capacity, leading to the reuse of some burial plots, raising significant concerns about available land and essential services amid the town’s rapid growth. As Nadi continues to expand with more hotels, homes, and businesses, the pressure on land and infrastructure is intensifying. The Nadi Town Council has acknowledged that the available land is dwindling, complicating the provision of basic needs such as housing and burial grounds.

During a recent Business Forum, Council representative Ratu Meli Naevo highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting the growing demand for land driven by internal migration and increased development. He pointed out the lack of available burial sites, stating, “We have burial grounds in Enamanu that has been used two times,” underscoring the pressing need for new spaces for the citizens of Nadi.

In response to the situation, the Council is actively engaging with traditional landowners to secure additional burial sites. This initiative comes amidst broader challenges, including land shortages that are hindering public development plans. The Council is collaborating with the Ministry of Local Government and other partners to devise long-term solutions to these critical issues.

Past discussions at various forums have indicated a strong community interest and need for infrastructure upgrades in Nadi, as emphasized by local business leader Lawrence Kumar, who previously raised concerns about the outdated Nadi market and the lack of recreational spaces. Kumar’s call for immediate assessments aligns with the current necessity for strategic planning and investment in community services to cater to the growing population.

As Nadi navigates these infrastructure challenges, there is a sense of hope that through collaboration between local government and community stakeholders, sustainable solutions can be developed. These solutions could not only address the immediate crisis regarding burial grounds but also enhance the overall quality of life for residents in the area. By prioritizing infrastructure improvements and engaging with local communities, Nadi can shaped a more sustainable urban future.
