In 1984, re-elected Nadi Mayor Councillor Manu Patel emphasized the importance of beautifying the town. Following his re-election for an eighth term, Patel outlined his top priorities in a report by The Fiji Times on January 6 of that year, which included the collection of rate arrears and the enhancement of Queens Rd, connecting the town to Nadi Airport.
Patel announced a major initiative to transform the aesthetic of the town, particularly the airport strip, leaning on support from the Regent Hotel for tree and plant donations to enhance the green spaces. This beautification effort involved collaboration with owners of vacant land willing to allow planting and the creation of plant islands in strategic locations.
Financial recovery was also a focal point for Patel, with an outstanding debt of approximately $400,000 in rate arrears from the previous eight years. He identified two major defaulters contributing over $150,000 to this total and expressed optimism that much of the overdue amount would be collected in the coming year.
Patel acknowledged the challenges posed by the economic climate, suggesting that it wasn’t the right time to pursue the fourth stage of the council’s commercial development plan, which would involve the establishment of office spaces and rental opportunities on the first floor of the development complex.
In addition to beautifying initiatives, the mayor took a firm stance on infrastructure improvements. Patel stressed the urgent need for the government to upgrade the Queens Rd, citing increased traffic and the necessity for better marking and sealing of the road. Upgrades were also proposed for hospital roads, drainage systems in new extensions like Martintar and Namaka, and the installation of streetlights in newly developed divisions.
As these infrastructure projects advance, there is a hopeful outlook for improved aesthetics and a rejuvenated economy in Nadi, enhancing the quality of life for residents and boosting the town’s appeal to visitors. The ongoing efforts reflect a commitment to both immediate upgrades and long-term urban planning that prioritizes community engagement and development.
Overall, the proactive approach from Mayor Patel regarding beautification and financial recovery, alongside government collaboration on infrastructure, paints a picture of a town on the brink of significant transformation and improvement.
