The Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) is strengthening its collaboration with local police and key stakeholders to enhance safety in Nadi for both residents and tourists. This initiative comes in light of recent incidents, including an alarming attack on foreign airline workers in the Martintar area. Responding to these concerns, NCCI President Dr. Ram Raju emphasized the necessity of improving security measures in response to calls from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka.
Dr. Raju acknowledged that the recent event serves as a wake-up call for the community, urging that immediate action is required to prevent future incidents. He highlighted discussions with police officials, revealing critical shortages in resources, such as inadequate manpower and only two operational vehicles at the Nadi Police Station. This situation has raised alarms within the business community, as ongoing security concerns lead to hesitance in making investments. Notably, one NCCI member has put a substantial $10 million building project on hold due to these issues, underscoring the strong link between public safety and economic development.
In addition to addressing violent incidents, Dr. Raju also pointed out the ongoing problem of harassment of tourists by certain vendors, which tarnishes Nadi’s reputation as a leading tourism destination. He asserted that the combined effort of the NCCI, police, and local stakeholders aims to create a safer environment to restore confidence among investors and visitors alike.
The proactive stance taken by the NCCI indicates a hopeful direction for Nadi. By addressing safety concerns, the community hopes to not only improve its security framework but also reclaim its status as a trusted and vibrant tourism hub in the South Pacific.
In summary, the call for enhanced security measures reflects the urgent need to ensure a secure, welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors. By working collaboratively, Nadi has the potential to strengthen its reputation and foster economic growth, ensuring a brighter future for all.
