Nadi’s Safety Crisis: Can Tourism Thrive Amid Rising Security Concerns?

The President of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr. Ram Raju, has called on the Fijian government to enhance the resources available to the Fiji Police Force, particularly in the burgeoning tourism hub of Nadi. He emphasized that while Nadi plays a vital role in national development, the current levels of public security services do not reflect this significance.

Dr. Raju’s remarks follow a concerning incident where airline crew members were attacked and robbed in the Martintar area. He expressed commitment to collaborating with the Police and other stakeholders to ensure the safety of both tourists and residents alike. He noted that the Chamber stands ready to support police efforts in creating a secure environment for everyone.

“This recent incident should act as a wakeup call for all involved to put forth stronger measures,” Dr. Raju stated, urging for better tools and manpower for security forces. He referenced Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka’s comments, labeling the attack a rare occurrence, but insisted that it is crucial to prevent any similar incidents in the future to protect Fiji’s image as the South Pacific’s tourism gateway.

In light of safety concerns, Dr. Raju also mentioned a broader unease within the business community regarding investment prospects. He highlighted that recent security issues have caused some investors to reconsider their commitments, citing a postponement of a $10 million building development as a direct consequence of the current security environment.

Additionally, the NCCI is focused on addressing issues related to the harassment of tourists by rogue vendors in Nadi Town, which exacerbates security and safety perceptions.

This proactive stance from the Nadi Chamber of Commerce underscores the importance of prioritizing public safety alongside economic growth. Ensuring a secure environment can cultivate greater confidence among investors and attract tourism, which is beneficial for the entire region. Collaborative efforts between businesses and law enforcement are essential for making Nadi a safer and more inviting destination.

In summary, Dr. Raju’s appeal highlights the connection between a secure environment and economic development, as well as the urgency of addressing public safety in Nadi for the benefit of its residents and visitors.
