Dr. Ram Raju, the President of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI), is calling on the government to enhance the Fiji Police Force’s capabilities with additional personnel and vehicles, particularly in the thriving tourism hub of Nadi. Dr. Raju’s appeal comes on the heels of a disturbing incident in which foreign airline crew members were attacked and robbed in Martintar, highlighting the need for improved public safety measures.

During this challenging time, he emphasized the importance of ensuring that both tourists and residents feel secure in their surroundings. Dr. Raju reassured the community that the Chamber is committed to collaborating closely with the police and other stakeholders to bolster safety measures.

In his remarks, he noted that the previous attack should serve as a wake-up call for more decisive actions to prevent future incidents. He remarked on the need for the security forces to be adequately equipped with the necessary resources. Dr. Raju also reiterated comments from Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka, who described the attack as an isolated incident, underscoring the importance of preventing any occurrences that could tarnish Fiji’s reputation as a prime tourist destination.

Amid growing concerns over safety, Dr. Raju pointed out that the overall lack of confidence among business owners is impacting investment decisions. He revealed that one prominent NCCI member has decided to delay a significant $10 million building project due to current safety concerns in Nadi. This example illustrates how deeply intertwined economic growth and security matters are.

In addition to crime concerns, he highlighted the issue of aggressive touting and harassment of tourists by some retailers in Nadi Town, which further detracts from the visitor experience. The NCCI aims to address these challenges to restore confidence in the destination, encouraging a safer and more welcoming environment for tourism and investment.

This commitment from the NCCI and a proactive approach to address security issues embodies a hopeful vision for Nadi’s future. Enhancing safety can lead to a resurgence of confidence among investors, potentially revitalizing the area’s economy while ensuring that both tourists and residents can enjoy their surroundings without fear.

Overall, Dr. Raju’s initiative strikes a positive chord, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between business and law enforcement for the greater good of Nadi’s community and its status as a tourism leader in the South Pacific.
