In 2023, Nadi recorded a significant uptick in criminal activity, with a total of 20,386 cases reported. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu shared this alarming statistic during the recent Nadi Business Forum, noting that these figures surpassed criminal activities reported in nearby Namaka.
While there has been a remarkable decrease in total crime over the last three years—dropping from 17,538 cases in 2022 to 6,139 in 2023—2024 has seen a troubling resurgence. Mr. Tudravu indicated that theft is the most common offense, followed by burglary and assault, which have increasingly impacted both Nadi and Namaka.
He attributed the rise to a surge in thefts at prominent locations including supermarkets and businesses. Similarly, recent reports have highlighted a broader trend of increasing theft and assault incidents across various regions, with authorities noting a 52% surge in theft cases in July 2024 compared to the previous year, generating significant financial losses for local businesses.
Amid rising crime rates, there is a growing concern about the safety of residents, especially in urban and peri-urban areas. Nevertheless, the police are pledging to enhance their response through increased community engagement and proactive policing strategies, creating potential for improved public safety.
The latest developments illustrate ongoing challenges in maintaining public safety in Fiji, yet they also present an opportunity for law enforcement to strengthen its resolve and foster collaboration with the community to combat these trends effectively. With increased public confidence in law enforcement, there is hope for a safer environment moving forward.
