Nadi’s Park Name Debate: A Royal Rename or Historical Oversight?

Prince Charles Park in Nadi is set to be renamed King Charles Park, but it was originally known as AD Patel Stadium. This point was emphasized by Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya during a recent parliamentary debate regarding the Nadi Town Council’s annual report.

Koya expressed concerns about the potential eradication of the AD Patel name, stating, “There is one thing that is forgotten… the actual stadium was named AD Patel Stadium.” He noted that in his travels, he had not encountered that name, suggesting it has been removed from public use.

He stressed the importance of retaining the name AD Patel, honoring an individual who has significantly contributed to Fiji’s history. “It would not be an honourable thing if we removed the name and did not put the name back on to the stadium,” Koya remarked. He urged authorities to ensure the name remains intact.

Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa acknowledged the proposal to rename the park to King Charles Park, citing changes in the monarchy. He mentioned that the council has reached out to the British High Commission for confirmation regarding the name change.
