Nadi Town Council’s special administrator Prem Singh has expressed optimism that the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Shashi Kiran, will urgently address the increasing number of street dwellers in the area. During discussions with local stakeholders, Singh emphasized the crucial role of collaboration, urging government ministries and social welfare services to partner with religious organizations and outreach programs to tackle the challenges surrounding homelessness and loitering effectively.

Singh highlighted the need for continuous monitoring and collaboration with multiple government agencies, such as those dealing with land, education, and the iTaukei community. He believes that such a coordinated approach is essential in mitigating the impact of street begging and overall social issues within Nadi.

Minister Kiran acknowledged the necessity of collaboration among various organizations, including churches and non-governmental entities, during her meeting with the Nadi Chamber of Commerce. She pointed out that the local social welfare office encounters complex cases involving drug-related issues and family violence, which complicates the support process for street dwellers. Her comments reflect the importance of tailored intervention strategies and community involvement to restore dignity and provide assistance to marginalized individuals.

The ongoing discussions have also raised concerns among local business owners about the disturbances caused by street dwellers. Figures such as Ashfaaq Khan and Marc McElrath have pushed for a unified response from authorities to maintain cleanliness and ensure safety. Their commitment to addressing the challenges posed by street begging highlights the community’s collective efforts to create a balanced environment that supports the vulnerable while also considering the needs of businesses.

Amid these challenges, there remains a hopeful outlook for Nadi. The collaborative spirit shown by local authorities, businesses, and organizations suggests that effective solutions can emerge, promoting a compassionate approach to homelessness and fostering a secure and harmonious community. Continued dialogue and cooperation will be vital in addressing these complex social issues and ensuring a brighter future for all residents of Nadi.
