The Cabinet has reviewed the findings from the Alternative Options Assessment Report regarding the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, which is being facilitated by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific. Collaborating agencies, including the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Local Government, and the Nadi Town Council, are set to investigate funding and practical implementation strategies for this significant initiative.

The Nadi Flood Alleviation Project is designed to enhance flood prevention measures, aiming to reduce flood risks through the construction of vital infrastructure such as drainage facilities, embankments, and a reservoir in the Nadi area, situated along the lower reaches of the Nadi River. This project has undergone multiple phases of planning and conceptual designs over recent years, focusing on both structural and non-structural flood mitigation strategies for the Nadi River basin.

As the largest climate resilience initiative in Fiji, the project seeks to mitigate economic and social losses, considering Nadi’s crucial role as a hub for tourism and as a primary gateway for Fiji to the global arena. Additionally, it aligns with the comprehensive disaster risk resilience strategies laid out in the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.

This initiative reflects a proactive approach to climate-related challenges, emphasizing the importance of sustainable development and disaster preparedness. As Fiji faces increasing environmental threats, projects like this demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding communities and enhancing resilience, ultimately leading to a more secure future for the nation.

In summary, by investing in the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, Fiji is taking significant steps toward protecting its economy and population from the threats posed by flooding, fostering hope for enhanced safety and sustainability.
