The Cabinet has reviewed the findings of the Alternative Options Assessment Report regarding the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, which is being facilitated by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific.

A collaborative effort between the Ministry of Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Local Government, and the Nadi Town Council will focus on identifying funding sources and implementation strategies for this project.

The Nadi Flood Alleviation Project aims to enhance flood prevention measures and mitigate flood risks for Nadi town, situated along the lower reaches of the Nadi River. Key components of the project will include the construction of drainage systems, embankments, and a reservoir.

Over the years, the project has progressed through multiple planning stages and conceptual designs that prioritize both structural and non-structural flood mitigation measures for the Nadi River basin.

Notably, this initiative stands as the largest climate resilience project in Fiji, set to lessen economic and social losses, especially given Nadi’s critical role in the tourism sector and its importance as a gateway for Fiji to the global market. Additionally, the project aligns with national disaster risk resilience strategies outlined in the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.

In summary, the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project represents a significant commitment to enhancing infrastructure resilience in Fiji, with the potential for long-term benefits for the local community and economy, especially in the face of climate change. The project is a promising step toward safeguarding Nadi’s future.
