Nadi’s Flooding Woes: A Crisis Decades in the Making

Flooding in Nadi town has been a persistent issue for every government since the 1970s, with the ongoing problem of waste management remaining unresolved. Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya brought attention to this matter during a parliamentary debate on the Nadi Town Council’s Review Report on Monday. He indicated that waste management is among the most significant challenges faced by the council.

“It has been an ongoing issue for many, many years,” Koya stated. He noted that while towns and municipalities across Fiji typically have designated areas for refuse collection and proper waste disposal, Nadi Town has not had such a facility for years. He pointed out that the report mentioned efforts to identify locations for establishing a waste management facility.

Koya emphasized the need to consider this situation as an opportunity to discuss recycling and proper waste management practices to protect the environment. He also praised the Nadi Town Council for achieving a 92 percent collection rate of town rates, with only 8 percent remaining in arrears for the year.

“This is a growing municipality,” he commented, recognizing the notable developments from the airport to Denarau, distinguishing Nadi from other towns and cities in Fiji.
