Flooding in Nadi town has been a persistent issue for every government since the 1970s, particularly concerning the waste management problems associated with it. This concern was brought to light by Opposition Member of Parliament Faiyaz Koya during a parliamentary debate on the Review Report of the Nadi Town Council.
Koya pointed out that this challenge remains one of the most significant problems faced by the council. He stated, “It has been an ongoing issue for many, many years.” He emphasized that while other towns and municipalities in Fiji have designated locations for waste collection and proper disposal, Nadi Town has not had such a system in place for many years.
The review report highlighted efforts to actively pursue finding a suitable site to establish a waste management facility. Koya viewed this situation as an opportunity to discuss recycling and proper waste management practices to protect the environment.
In addition, Koya praised the Nadi Town Council for successfully collecting 92 percent of its town rates, noting that only 8 percent remains in arrears for the year. He acknowledged the rapid development of the municipality, particularly from the airport to Denarau, which distinguishes it from other towns and cities in Fiji.
